Merthyr Tydfil
Merthyr Tydfil or Merthyr Tudful is a town in Wales.
Although once the largest town in Wales, it is now ranked as
the 13th largest urban area in Wales. According to legend, the
town is named after Saint Tydfil, a daughter of King Brychan
of Brycheiniog. According to her legend she was slain at Merthyr
by pagans around 480; the place was subsequently named Merthyr
Tydfil in her honour.
Merthyr Tydfil is the birthplace of world famous designer and
business women Laura Ashley and Bill Roberts, the engineer
who designed and built the Daleks (Dr Who), unleashing a wave
of terror on the universe. The fashion designer Julien Macdonald
was born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1972 who was once the cheif designer
for Givenchy.
Merthyr Tyfil has also been the birthplace to these sporting
heros, boxing - Johnny Owen, Eddie Thomas MBE, Howard Winstone
MBE and rugby player Robert Sidoli.
